Analysis of opening sequences

The Godfather

How does this opening sequence establish the key generic codes and conventions?

It establish its key generic codes and conventions by non-digetic sound which was soundtrack very slow and calm. Also the black background and title of the film in white letters which has connotation of white as going to good way and black as going to bad side. As well they use slow camera movements in the opening sequence to show that they building up audience to the disruption.

Does this sequence meet your expectations of a typical opening sequence from this genre? Explain why or why not?

It does as in every crime drama genre film it starts with an introducing the issue to the audience as in this opening sequence the issue is violence talking about beating characters daughter. And the soundtrack used in most of the films of this genre in this one it was used as well.

What clues are given about the narrative?

The clues given about the narrative I think is the main element of the movie will be violence as the characters conversation talking about what they did to his daughter will lead them to going after them to get revenge of what they done because one of the characters asking for help form other character.

If there are characters at this point, do they follow the typical features of characters from this genre or not?

At this point there was two characters introduced I don’t think one of them had the typical features of crime drama film because he was crying and upset showing his soft side and getting emotional where is the other one was very serious and his facial expression looked like his has power over everything.

Write about how people and places are represented in this sequence? Do they follow or subvert genre conventions? Explain.

The setting the two characters were in was a office room and it was represented as the place where they have business discussions any concerns or private things are talked about. The people represented they were very serious and protecting as the main character had people watching his back as he stood up they all when behind him as this have a connotation of his the main focus and that he has power or people are after him and they want to kill him. The two main characters represented very opposite as one was very emotional and showing his feelings crying where is the other was represented as a cold person with no feelings.

How is music used? How does this reflect the genre?

The music was used as soon the film started non-digetic sound I don’t think it reflects the genre of the film because the soundtrack is very calm, relaxing you wouldn’t expect something happening in the first scene.

How are titles used? How does this reflect the genre?

The title ‘The Godfather’ could reflect the genre more to a drama side but on the other hand it could also reflect crime because the family member will do anything to protect their family member even if this lead into crime so I think overall it does reflect the genre.
