Evaluation question 2

How does your opening sequence represent particular social groups?

Our film focuses on the two social groups following a righteous path being a good person and the bad person following the corrupt path. So therefore are film has antagonist (Nicholas) and protagonist (Trey). One of the social group we represent as bad always on streets committing crime and breaking the law and we have also a very opposite to it a character helping the country, protecting people and even saving lives.

Most crime drama films would have an antagonist and protagonist where one character is doing the bad things and other trying to stop being the hero. We didn’t include the main characters in are opening sequence however we have them in are film. Example to are opening sequence ‘Scarface’ (1983) not including the character, but when the character gets introduced his being shown in the police station being in trouble which tells us as audience he is the antagonist and that he will be associated with crime.

The two characters we had in are film was:

Character 1

Name: Nicholas Smith

Nickname: Big Jon

Age: 22

Date of birth: 22.01.1987

Gender: Male

Current Adress: 42 Boxley Street, West Silvertown, E15 4nf
1 younger brother
Health Status: Healthy
Lives With: Gang Members
Personality: Never gives up, Risk Taker
Ethic Background: Black British

Single

We haven’t included the character in are opening sequence but if we did then he would have been presented with a hoodie to look as a gangster and looking bad to society also having angry facial expressions and looking like he has power.

Character 2

Name: Trey Smith

Nickname: Tee Dog

Age: 20

Date of birth: 10.08.1989

Place of birth: Barking Hospital, London

Gender: Male

Current Adress: 1 Barge house road, North Woolwich E16 3nx

1 Older Brother

Health Status: Healthy

Personality: Tough

Lives on his own

Single

Ethnic Background: Black British

We also haven’t included this character in are opening sequence, but if we did included him then we would of shown in a good way being dressed in casual clothe looking like a normal person and not expecting a bad thing from him.

However in are opening sequence we represented are characters in the stereotypical way as the same people would feel about people with hoodies and always on street so we tried to create that effect by dressing are cast with hoodies.

As in terms of looking for cast we had to look for someone that could really get into being a gangster kind of type person so there was a lots of factors we had to take into consideration such as they body language being serious not having a happy face and when being dressed would look like a real gangster from the street. In order to get the best cast for the role we needed them to have rehearsals to see how they would look as acting a gangster kind of type person dressed with hoodies. We directed cast to be serious and looking very angry because crime drama characters are all represented not approachable through different elements of Mise en scene facial expressions and costumes we were trying to achieve the negative representation of the character for audience to expect any actions from the character so it could create that shocking scene in the end of are film, however not in opening sequence also at the same time worried as we had a scene dealing with drugs showing that by their facial expressions and body language which represents even though we shown them in a negative way even though they don’t care about society they still trying to follow the rules as drugs are classed illegal which show two different types of personalities the characters have. Also the characters shown in gang social group as they all dressed urban which gathers in a particular area which follows a stereotype of gang culture as they all hang out in the same spot with their members. Are antagonist (Nicholas) character could be compared to a film ‘Adulthood’ as are film follows the street gang culture the director represented him in the bad stereotypical way he done that by dressing the main character Sam by him wearing a hoodie so we kind of gathered are ideas from the film as its similar to are product.

As in Mise en scene the costumes used to represent the way we wanted are characters were by wearing a hoodie to show them in a bad way. The setting are character were shown was in the alley the effect it has the representation of them being dangerous also it shows they are from this area and they control it also is the place were you would expect most gangster to be in dealing with drugs and etc. We asked are cast to have a serious facial expressions to represent them as they have power and they don’t care about nothing as in most crime drama films such as ‘The Godfather’ the main characters facial expression seem that he is in power and not being afraid of nobody. Also the props we have given to are characters such as cigarettes, alcohol bottle we used this prop to create an effect of the characters being bored and just hanging around the streets looking for trouble and we tried to show its what they do everyday.
