Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our film is a low budget film so we can’t distribute are film in blockbuster the reasoning for this is that are movie is not a mainstream film and to get are product to audience as a mainstream film is not possible, but however there are distributors that would consider publishing are film to the audience as we have codes and conventions and a clear genre as most of crime drama films. And therefore it would be distributed to a smaller niche scale. And product the product that we have produced would really be hard to distribute it worldwide.

The way distribution works is firstly an individual comes up with an idea for the film after then the outline is made the pre-production then a studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film. The people are needed for crew, cast, director, screenwriter and producer. After the made product needs to be sent to the studio then the studio makes a licensed agreement with the distributors. Then the distribution company determines how many copies need to be made then the distribution company shows the movie to prospective buyers representing in the cinemas. The buyer negotiates with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement. Then the copies of the film is sent to the cinema before the film is released then the movie is showed for the amount of weeks as agreed with the distributor. We followed similar steps but not all because we didn’t actually distributed are film.

The potential distributors that would distribute are film would be ‘Independent film and Television alliance’ http://www.ifta-online.org/. IFTA is a non-profit association who tries to provide the independent film and television industry with high-quality marketplace-oriented services and worldwide representation. The company produces more than 500 independent films and many hours of television programming each year.

Another distributor for are film would be ‘Dogwoof’ http://www.dogwoof.com/ . ‘Dogwoof’ is a social enterprise. As a social enterprise their main aim is to generate profit to further social and environmental goals, in particular to acquire and release more social issues based feature films and documentaries. And I think this company would be good to distribute are film because they focus on the social issues and they are specialised as are film is about crime issues happening now everywhere in the world. Also they release films their films nationwide. This distributor operated in the UK.

The distributor I would consider would be ‘UK film council’ http://www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/distribution last year the company less than 100% out of 505 released in the UK accounted for more than 80% of the total box office generated. The company mainly distributes non-mainstream films called like Brokeback Mountain, March of the Penguins, Closer, Volver and Pan's Labyrinth which can attract large audiences. They also try to release as more as they can non-mainstream films so audience will more likely go see non-mainstream film rather than a mainstream film such as ‘Avatar’ and etc.

This distributor would be a good choice as they are very experienced and have a good reputation also it would be good as are film is also non-mainstream, however the funds need to be taken into consideration as we don’t have the funds to go for a big distributing company. Even though we don’t have the funds by going with this distributor I believe the film will be even know worldwide as people in UK will get to see it people abroad will want to see it too but it depends on the audiences reception and critics but choosing this distributor would be a good choice because they distribute their films in UK. The most appealing distributor would be for are film is ‘YouTube’ in the internet it will be also the cheapest way of getting are film out there because it wouldn’t cost as any money another advantage is that it has 200million members so there we could attract secondary target audience or even people that are not really interested in this type of genre and would target a wider globe. However as it have many members it would mean the completion would be really massive. However the other problem it might face is copyright as people might want to publish it in other internet sites without permission. But overall this would be one of the best ways of distributing the film. Other option of distributing is film would be also internet but using ‘Facebook’ as it have 300million members which have even more member than ‘YouTube’ also on ‘Facebook’ fan groups can be produced in order to talk about the film and critics also we could receive a lot of feedback and fans could stay in touch with maybe new releases in the future.

The company I would want to distribute my film to would be ‘Dogwoof’ as they are specialised in the social issues and are film is about the social issues and therefore I think are film could be tried to be released nationwide. The other way I would want to show my film would be film festivals that happen in UK every year and get even celebrities to endorse are film, however it could a good idea but it could cost a lots of money and as are film is a low-budget film it would be difficult to do that. The best way to show are film to the audience would be on the internet as everyone uses internet and its easy to use and therefore I think are film would appeal to more people and more people would see it and therefore it could be a successful film and it even could be a nationwide film.
